Hello everyone, and welcome to my blog. Here begins the (more or less accurate) account of my year-long Rotary exchange in Heiligenhaus, Germany. For those who don’t know, Rotary Youth Exchange is a program offered around the world for high-school students who want to spend a year abroad. It is not a direct exchange (ie. club-to-club or family-to-family) so while a Rotary club might send a student (called an “Outbound”) to Brazil, they could receive a student (an “Inbound”) from Taiwan, the Netherlands, etc. Rotary International’s mission in this project is to create international fellowship and promote world peace (although being in a host family of four children, I haven’t learned a lot about peace yet). For me, this translates to a gap year of nothing-but-fun (I believe that was part of the guarantee) - staying with host families, going to high school, getting involved in the community, and learning about German culture. Carpe diem, Carpe Essen, etc.!
